So...if Doku met Kou six years ago as he states in manga volume 3, and Gojyo is 22 at that point in the story, that means that Gojyo was 16 when his brother took up with the prince. And yet...he looked like 8 when that whole incident with his mom went down...or maybe, with a bit of stretching, 12 at the very very most. Are we to assume, then, that Jien was wandering around for four to eight years between killing his mother and becoming Dokugakuji? Somehow the way it's laid out in the manga appears as though he left home and went directly to Kou, but...that would have made Gojyo 15 or 16 (allowing for travel time) when he was left on his own and...he just looked so much younger. Jien's the one who looked 16. Gojyo's a late bloomer, perhaps? (shrug) Or maybe Doku just kept his hair cut and was bloody for some other reason when he arrived at Kou's castle and really was wandering about for years before he found Kou...possible, I suppose...I mean, he wasn't necessarily heading straight west with a purpose and the Sanzo-ikkou have been traveling for like a year now according to Reload volume 3 and haven't reached Houtou castle yet despite the fact that Kou & crew hop back and forth like it's nothing. Must be those flying dragons...Jiroushin *did* say the journey was much swifter by air...

OMG, I *love* you. Even if my co-workers *are* giving me The Look 'cause I can't seem to keep a straight face now...
(wanders back to work, still giggling, unable to dismiss the image of Gojyo shaking Hakkai and yelling 'Hey! Hey you in there! What you got that's worth living for, huh?' or thereabouts)

Date: 2004-09-01 06:23 am (UTC)Basically, Minekura has contradicted herself regarding Gojou's age when Jien offed their mum. In one version he's 8ish and in the other he's around 12. I can't point to direct quotes, but my sources on this are reliable. There's A LOT of unexplained backstory to Doku, which leaves fic-writers free to have fun; not that I've seen anyone take advantage, but... :) One hopes Minekura will tell Doku's story one day, but one may be hoping in vain.
In short: Minekura isn't too worried about timeline paradoxes, much to the agony of those of her readers (like me, and, it seems, you) who like orderly timelines. :P
