Contains spoilers, if you haven't yet seen the film

So I went and saw Return of the King about three weeks ago, now; and I thoroughly enjoyed it. A fitting end to a grand epic.

Now I must *really* go read the books to see where it all came from, yes?

Sam...Sam. Samwise Gamji. Everyone needs a friend like Sam. Frodo would have been *nothing* without Sam; the world would never have been saved if not for Sam. Sam is the true hero of this piece, from my point of view. And...it was utterly disappointing, in one way, to see him go back to the shire and marry and have kids. I mean, it's good in a way, too--we can see how the journey has changed him and given him the guts to go for the girl he's apparently admired for some time, and it's great that he gets a family and a happy-ever-after; but...I *so* wanted him & Frodo to settle down together! (sits down and cries disappointed-slashy-fangirl tears) My god, man, their affection for one another was just all over the damn place! And...and...Frodo even kissed him goodbye, for Christ's sake! Even if it *was* just to the top of the head. There's so *clearly* something there! (cries more; wails) I wanted them to stay together!

(composes self)

And Merry and Pip...*oh* yeah, there's something there too. (grins) When the movie was over, and everyone was filing out of the theater, there was this one girl behind me who was crying. I heard her saying something about how it's just not fair, that Frodo goes off with the Elves and Sam gets a family and gets closure and all that but what about the other two? Why don't they get closure? Don't they deserve families too? It's just not fair!

I kid you not, she was bawling her eyes out. And I was so tempted to turn around and say, "What, didn't you catch that? They hooked up and lived happily ever after *together*. As a *couple*--isn't that family?"

Something tells me she would've decked me, though... ^_^

I left that movie seriously jonesing for some Hobbit slash. Still haven't found a chance to go looking for it, though...

Pretty, pretty Frodo...y'know, I first saw Elijah Wood years ago when he played the title role in Disney's rendition of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn; he didn't look much more than ten years old. I remember thinking 'What an adorable kid! What a very pretty boy!' and being shocked by those electric blue eyes. And watching him as Frodo, I can't help but think that with a little adjustment to the hair, and a serious alteration to that permanently-tragic facial expression, he'd make a damned convincing Heero, physically at least...(shrug) Which then of course leads me to compare Sam to Quatre. And I do find similarities--character-based, though, rather than visual. That simple, genuine kindness. Fiercely protective of friends. Severely underestimated based on outward appearance. Vast strength of heart so often overlooked. Undaunted loyalty.

I will *not* do a GW-as-LotR fusion, I will *not* do a GW-as-LotR fusion...I don't think there's enough character parallels, and I *don't* need a project of that size regardless.

Memorable moments...hmm. Sam, when Frodo collapses so near the journey's end. And he's got to be just as exhausted himself, but he only says "I can't carry the ring, Mr. Frodo, but I can carry you!" and slings Frodo over his shoulders and keeps climbing the volcano...I could have cried, right there. Everyone needs a friend like that. The world needs more men like that.

And when Eowyn was battling the Witch King, and he's all 'No man can defeat me!' and she runs his helmet through and says that 'No man stands before you--I am a woman!'-type line...I'll admit it. I had a teensy little flash of Girl-Power pride, right there...

But my personal favorite--the best, the most breath-taking moment? Had to be Legolas, and his single-handed take-down of that war-elephant thingy. That dude's got iron-clad balls of steel, I tell ya. I swear, half the theater swooned. Me included. My god, whatta man! Er, Elf! How sexy was that, huh?

And of course, then the funniest moment was Gimli's line directly after: "That still only counts as one!" (grins) Yeah, technically, I suppose; unless you count all the orcs & what-not that were riding it. But I guess they could've hit the ground & survived...briefly.

If I was to collect a harem of live bishies, in addition to animated ones, Leggy would *definitely* be a shoe-in.

Anyway. Need to read the trilogy. Need to make time to watch the first two over, and then go see the third again. Some seriously good stuff. I've been waiting for movies like this ever since I got hooked on Terry Brooks when I was in 8th grade. Which, having seen LotR, it suddenly becomes clear to me where much of his influence came from, particularly in his first book. That being The Sword of Shannara, for those keeping score...which was published the same year I was born. Heh. Point of pride. I need to catch up on that series, too. I'm rambling. I'll go now.

Errr, you liked it then?

"What, didn't you catch that? They hooked up and lived happily ever after *together*. As a *couple*--isn't that family?"

Alas no. They both get married to girls too and have children *pouts* But I reckon that's just a cover so no-one will suspect they're actually together.

And yes!! Go read the books!! Just make sure you get past the first few chapters 'cause a lot of people find them a bit boring.
