- Watched Coraline last night. Charmingly creepy. ^_^
- Still no Online assignment posted for class this week; since it'd be due tomorrow I'm going to assume that the instructor is just skipping this week. Fine by me.
- Naruto Shippuuden English dub is just as good as the Naruto dubs have been until now. Has the same pronunciation issues, too, but I can live with that. Long as I get my online subs fix every now and then. ^_^
- Wii Sports Resort promises more fun of the basic Wii variety. Kiba-Mii is a natural at wakeboarding, but ironically enough he sort of failed at the Dog Frisbee event. ^_^; We'll have to work on that.

Comment on this post saying you want a letter - I'll give you one, then post to your journal your five favourite songs that begin with that letter - along with downloads if you like. Or music videos...whatever works.

[livejournal.com profile] kispexi2 gave me 'D'. And man, was it tough to narrow down the list to a mere five, but (and I chose downloads):

Damaged by Assemblage23. A beautifully upward-looking melancholy sort of thing showcasing heavy influence of bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure. I love the fact that even though he's singing about being damaged and weary and all, it's very somber and introspective but not terribly angsty - it's very much a 'Give me something to fight for and I can pull through this' type of exploration.

Dance of the Maidens by David Arkenstone. An instrumental piece from his Quest of the Dream Warrior album; the sound is primarily Mediterranean with hints of Egyptian/Middle Eastern flavors. It's sort of a slow-to-moderate, temple-ritual, could-be-belly-dance-at-double-the-tempo feel, overall, and would not be out of place in a Hercules/Xena-type fantasy world.

Desire You by Charon. Dark-melodic romanti-goth rock-metal from Finland. *licks*

The Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band. Country-slash-Southern-Rock, I've never been sure where this rightly falls. One of those classics that everyone seems to have heard of. Something about it appeals to me despite the countryness of it - the narrative aspect, perhaps. I quite like storytelling music - not exactly bardic, this one, but fun nonetheless.

Du Riechst So Gut by Rammstein. German...uh, dance-metal they've called themselves. With a title that translates to 'You Smell So Good' and a sensually-creepy supernatural-themed video like this, it...shouldn't really be any surprise that I'm rather fond of this song. ^_^

~~~***~~~
Separate of the meme, but coincidentally enough both still keeping with the 'D' thing, a couple songs wherein lyrical themes and overall 'attitude' conveyed remind me of Saiyuki:
The Deep Blue by Rawlins Cross. Canadian Celtic rock. More Gaiden than main timeline - have at the lyrics, you'll see what I mean (click the link next to the song title).
Devil By My Side by David Usher. Also Canadian, but a coolly instrospective sort of not-quite-rock sound. More main timeline than Gaiden. Most prominently in the second verse, where the first two lines sound almost tailor-written to Gojyo, the next two to Hakkai, then Sanzo, and Goku on the last line. Lyrics.
~~~***~~~

Relatedly, in a similar vein, but moving down the alphabet to letter 'E', have at a pair of cross-incarnational 10K/58 tunes:

Ever The Same by Rob Thomas. As mentioned here - lyrics in the comments. More 10K than 58.

Eclipsed by Evans Blue. It's...soulfully melancholy rock, like...emo, except nowhere near punk enough to really be emo. Emo for grownups? *waves hands* I wouldn't care much for this song one way or another, in all probability, without the Saiyuki association; but the overwhelming 58-ness of the reincarnation-themed lyrics makes it impossible for me not to get attached to it. Even though, hey, it actually says 'lights', not 'lives' like I'd thought. >_< Still, doesn't much change the impact.

I think that leaves just the two instances of that 'Words' meme that I still need to finish and post.

ohhh new music. I am always on the look for new music. Can't really afford albums unless I know I like them and uh....just don't get the itunes stuff to well. My music era was the 80's when MTV started out, LOL. I kind of dropped out of listening to new music when everything became rap (ugh) but have recently had friends on LJ drop me a tune here an there and I'm finding I really like the industrial type stuff. Thank you!

I'm one of those people who will download just about anything that I come across - I may end up hating it, but I won't know 'til I try it and I've found some awesomely good stuff by sampling random uploads from the f-list. In return, I like to throw some of my own out there whenever I can. I don't know that many people download, but...they're out there.

I totally hear you about dropping new music in the last ten-fifteen years. I listen to very little radio anymore; the internet and f-listers have been a blessing in discovering things I really like. A good two-thirds, probably, of the stuff I like is not stuff that local radio plays, much less plays on one station. And what's ironic about the whole RIAA-Download-Sharing-is-BAD!!! debacle is that without that random good-faith sharing, there are many bands I've since gone and legally bought that I never would have heard of otherwise.

So yeah.

If you're interested, you can hit my 'music' tag, and browse back through previous music posts. Some of the dL's from the most recent are still up, and if there's anything in older posts (no matter how old) that looks interesting I'd be happy to provide. ^_^

Edited for not finishing the thought I set out to convey.

I will most definitely browse and look! Like you, I download just about anything someone throws out there and give it a few listens to see what I think. I can't flat out say that I hate XX of any kind of music, there will always be an exception somewhere, though I tend to lean more towards the metal, industrial, techno, classical, 80's, and folk/irish types of music.

I am totally in agreement with you on the whole RIAA is crap, I don't know how many albums I've picked up here or there (or have put on my wishlist and someone sent them my way) because through friends I heard enough songs off the album to know it would be worth the investment. Dear God I have an insane collection of CD's in storage containers out in my garage (I moved about a year and a half ago into a three room cabin on a lake and am STILL sorting stuff, eventually I will start rotating CD's in and out of the house and/or get them all burned ot mp3 and put them on the compy.

Thank you again for the tunes! I was delighted to see Charlie Daniels, I am a total fiddle/violin music whore and was dancing around while doing dishes with that jamming over the speakers. My poor redneck neighbors never know what's going to blaring out of this place next. One day I'm conducting bubble orchestra (with both hands using bubble wands no less, a west blowing wind taking bubbles all the way down the lake was EXCELLENT) off my dock to....damn, I think it's flight of the valkyries...the classical music piece that sections it were meant to be played by firing cannons (come one, how can you not like music that has CANNONS as a musical instrument!!!???) another day I'm running off horny teenagers making out in a boat in the culvert next to my house by blaring "zombie nation" by Grendal, then "copperhead Road" by Steve Earle? I think? and Charle Daniels while doing dishes.

I'm a whole world of education in and of itself down here in Van Bibber :)

Since you mention both metal and classical, I have to ask: How do you feel about blending the two? If that appeals, I highly highly recommend you check out Nightwish (http://www.nightwish.com/). If you're already familiar with them, then never mind the following pimpage. ^_^

Nightwish is a Finnish metal band that, up until late in 2005, had a classically-trained opera soprano on vocals. They're distinctly metal, but heavy on the melody and classical elements and have always had a lot of keyboards and other 'embellishments' beyond your basic drum/bass/guitar lineup.

Sample their sound on YouTube:

Ocean Soul (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYu2EnCG2Ww)
10th Man Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ctCIUTySM4)
Lagoon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUxYkR-8JTQ)
Gethsemane (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BnbJeJ3qGE) - I would dearly love to hear this one rendered in their more recent style. Lyrics might potentially offend the devoutly hard-core christian.

The last album they did before firing their singer, they brought in a full symphony orchestra for backup and it's just an awesome listen:

Nemo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SO4LyKd-Hws)
Ghost Love Score (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEAgchvPcc8)
Wish I had an Angel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubCv-kHUQ-o)

They then hired a new singer who's much less operatic but still very good, and they've put out one album with her so far (in 2007). They kept the full orchestra, and possibly made it even bigger:

Amaranth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdZn7k5rZLQ)
Eva (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tspgqtWA4HA)
For The Heart I Once Had (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u_HB79QS0g)

If you're interested, or can't find them elsewhere, I would be happy to upload and share - I have everything I've been able to find for these guys.

I will have to check that out...you tube is a bit of a problem for me though, I have a satellite ISP and therefor can only download stuff or hit sites with heavy kb pull for three hours a day very late at night....there is cap on usage at all other times. Damn but I wish there was another ISP out here in nowhereville. If you don't mind zipping up a few select pieces and putting them up somewhere, I'd appreciate it, I'd love to check them out. Hell, my calender ringtone on my cell phone is the "diva dance" from the fifth element (which is opera and techno combined basically) :P

I'd be glad to zip up a few tracks for you to check out - I should be able to get to it this weekend. I'm always happy to spread the Word of Nightwish, haha. ^_^; They're one of those bands I would never have found/bought without internet sharing, and they're very much a favorite by now. Stay tuned... ^_^

Nightwish sampler (http://www.4shared.com/dir/19573306/c239acfd/Nightwish.html)

Some of my favorites, but certainly not all. Eleven tracks uploaded to a non-expiring share folder. Thought it might be better to have each song individually rather than one big zipfile since bandwidth caps can be an issue. Enjoy!

After you've had a chance to check them out, I'd love to know what you think!
