Calling All iTunes users...

I freely admit to being iTunes illiterate. It's just completely unfamiliar to me, in that I've never used it. My husband runs it, however, and has run into a problem. His download library is kept on an external harddrive that plugs into his laptop. When the laptop is moved, of course the drive is unplugged and iTunes is not accessed while the library is unplugged. He learned the hard way that if iTunes can't find the library, it won't automatically re-find it once it's re-connected and every song/show will have to be re-directed by hand. And that's where we're running into our problem. The compy hasn't been unplugged in awhile, and iTunes has not been opened up at all while disconnected from the library. But. Everything is coming up 'cannot be played because file cannot be found/Would you like to locate?' and he's having to go navigate to the external harddrive and find each individual song/episode/etc to re-establish playability. Now, his library's relatively small compared to some of you out there (only 700+ songs and maybe 100 or so TV/anime eps), but. It's still a royal PITA and I'm thinking there's got to be a better way to re-map the connection, but...again. iTunes illiterate. I don't know how. I mean, I figured out where/how to tell it the default download location for saving downloaded files, but that doesn't seem to have any bearing on where it looks for existing files to play.
So. Help? Neither of us is in the mood to re-map 700+ songs individually.^_^;
And. Also. Any ideas as to why it's not finding the library when it hasn't been unplugged/accessed while separated?
