...I have a new betta.

He's still in his plastic cup.

I'm a little freaked out about acclimating and transferring him without killing him. See, I knows what to do with fishes in bags. But the cup ain't gonna float in his little tank to equalize water temps.

So.

*frets*

*starts searching the 'net for helpful information*

*adds a tiny bit of tank-water to the cup*

*keeps researching*

I've owned bettas before. As a general rule, they like warm, very still and stagnant water (although they're fine at room temp - just not as active). For that reason, my acclimation usually involved just letting the cup sit on top of the tank for an hour or so, with the tank's heater off long enough to let the water equalize at room temperature. I'd add a little tank water to the cup, add a little more, and then just scoop the boy out in a net and drop him into the tank (they're also pretty hardy).

Only time this wasn't enough was when there were other fish in the tank. In that case, I transferred the betta to a bag and let him acclimate to the fish's presence a bit more slowly, just to minimize the aggressive reactions.

Just my two cents. Good luck. =)

*pockets two cents* All advice is of value.

And I did figure out a way to get the cup floating in the tank (half-gallon size) in the end, so I ended up doing pretty much the same as you said. I appreciate the voice of experience. Thank you. ^_^
