Notes: This is a mediocre ficcish blurb spring-boarded from Happy Birthday Kakashi by Faiyuuhi on dA. It kind of totally failed to go where I thought I was heading when I started it. T_T Also, how telling is it that even when it's a birthday piece for Kakashi, it's still all about Yamato? ^_^;;

~~~***~~~
It was clear enough who the present was from. The shrubby little tree it was hanging on hadn't been in Kakashi's yard last night, and the ribbons were wrapped with an asymmetrical sort of organic imperfection that made Kakashi's mouth quirk up at the corner. Even without the 'Love Tenzou' tag, it was obvious.
His kouhai was unusually sentimental about birthdays and such, at least for an ANBU. That was one of the things that Kakashi really liked about him--Tenzou managed to be wonderfully ordinary despite a profession that would make the average person at least a little bit crazy, and Kakashi found it refreshing.
At the same time, Tenzou knew him well enough not to make a fuss about his birthday, either. He may not have known all of Kakashi's reasons for preferring to let the day pass more or less unremarked, but he respected them all the same. Tenzou never insisted on celebrations or wished him a happy birthday or anything of the sort and while he stubbornly insisted on gift-giving, he kept it low-key. He never did it in person or mentioned it after; he put the gift where Kakashi would find it and left it at that.
And it was always something practical, nothing frivolous or extraneous, just something to acknowledge that Kakashi had survived another year and that Tenzou thought it was an occasion worth marking.
Like the tree. Kakashi knew the box hanging from it was symbolic, was probably either empty or full of fertilizer and pamphlets with tips on growing a healthy tree; the tree itself was the actual gift. Tenzou could have grown it full-size easily, but he'd deliberately made it a sapling.
Staring at it, at the stout little trunk and the tufts of foliage crowning its stubby height, Kakashi realized that while he'd never really given his future more than a passing thought, he did actually want to live long enough to see this tree tower over his home, was looking forward to lounging underneath it with a good book years down the road.
He imagined napping in its shade as an old, old man, sun filtering through the leaves and Tenzou dozing beside him, and he smiled.
