Meme-sheepage: Top Ten Fics as Indicated by AO3 Hits (even though I still haven't finished loading my back-catalogue, as it were - by the looks of things, it wouldn't make any difference anyway).
10. Challenging - GaiKaka smuttiness - it does a body good.
9. Sasukelicious - Apparently Sasuke still sells, even (especially?) on crack. I would have expected this to fall higher on the list, given his historical popularity. Then again, it's not smut.
8. Learning to See - NejiNaru non-smut. This is my biggest seller over on ff.net. Surprised (but pleased!) to see it doing so well because this is a woefully underappreciated pairing in my experience.
7. Insipience - NejiNaru smut. Presumably out-performing #8 by virtue of its explicit content.
6. Worth It - KakaIru smut will always sell, obviously - this was written back in 2008 and it's the only entry on this list that's more than a year old. I'm...perversely pleased that it's not #1 nor even top 5 despite being the most prolific M/M pairing in this fandom. ^_^;
5. Steam - YamaSai smut FTW. Terribly pleased that this one made it onto the list at all let alone broke the top 5 when the pairing has such a small following. Even if I have to assume that the only reason it's doing so well is because I posted the AO3 link alongside the LJ link in the comms so it's gotten directed traffic beyond the random AO3-originated searching.
4. Flash Fics - This surprises me, as none of the five pairings written are rabidly popular in my observation and these are terribly brief anyway. I'm guessing it's either the Sasuke tag and/or perhaps the NejiNaru tag that's driving the hit count, since both of my other NejiNaru fics are also in the top 10. Maybe I'm wrong about the pairing being underappreciated. Maybe instead its fans just tend to be the quiet reader type over the writer/artist type, in general.
3. Affirmation - KakaNaru smut. I'm a bit surprised; I had no idea this pairing had anything more than limited niche popularity.
2. Past the Limits - Apparently KakaNaru smut sells well.
1. Delayed - Apparently, GaiKaka smut sells better. \o/ This does benefit from link-directed traffic as well, but it's also my most popular fic over on Y-gal (out of the select few posted there) so it's hard to say where the hit count would sit without that boost.
No surprise that almost all of these are smutfics. I personally think some of my non-smut that didn't make the list is better, but fandom and human nature being what they are...ehhh.
Hit-counts are considerably lower on the Saiyuki fic I've back-posted; half of them don't even break into double digits. I wonder if it's an age-of-fic thing or a size-of-fandom thing, or even a where-people-in-a-fandom-look-for-fic thing. Curious. Not expecting anything different when I get my GW fics loaded up, either. It would be awesome if there was a way to track LJ hits and mL hits and consolidate all fic-activity data from all across the web and get a truly accurate historical look at which fics are/have been the most popular. I'd like to see how my Saiyuki and GW fics in their heydays compare.
