Some of you may remember about three years back, I was befuddled and irked over a couple of Depeche Mode CDs that had gone missing from my library. While the Personal Jesus single eventually turned up, my copy of Violator is still MIA. That particular disc had great sentimental value attached, having been Benjamin's before he died, but I've finally given up on finding it and broke down and picked up another copy. Which, when combined with the fact that I've also finally found Martin Gore's Counterfeit2 CD, means that I can now properly supplement his section of the favorite voices post I made this past spring, as follows:
Depeche Mode - Sweetest Perfection
One of those occasions where Martin stepped up to the lead mic, and one of my favorite DM songs. I love the roll and the rhythm and the rhyme scheme and the build of it. Seems to be about an unspecified addiction of some sort, which touches familiarly on the obsessive-addictive tendencies in my own personality, which probably accounts for at least some of the resonance.
Martin Gore - I Cast a Lonesome Shadow
I heard this on internet radio a couple-three years back, which is how I found out about his second solo release. It's...stylistically, it wouldn't be out of place on DM's Playing the Angel album. Lyrically, it's satisfyingly melancholy with just a hint of the poetic to it. It's hard to put to words what I like about it any better than that.
