Ehhh...poor Nataku-fishy doesn't know what to make of a room full of 'tween and teen boys. Nephew is having his 11th bday party, see, and he and his friend and his older brother and one of his older brother's friends are all packed into our itty-bitty living room playing DBZ on the playstation. The other adults are outside 'round the grill doing...whatever it is people do at these sorts of things, I guess. Me, I'm tired of shivering out there with my thin 'Zonie blood and cursing the lack of Spring warmth and thus have come inside and holed up in my little corner of reality to be happily anti-social and-- *gasp* --actually get a smidgen of writing worked on. Before I start, though:

I've spent quite a bit of time in recent weeks going through my CD collection, much of which has been in storage, to sort/clean/consolidate and otherwise organize it. In the course of this, I unearthed several things that I had completely forgotten I had. And several more that I wondered why on earth I'd ever bought. ^_^; However.

One of those from the first category was the Refreshments' Fizzy Fuzzy Big and Buzzy CD. Which I had picked up years ago back home in Phoenix when they had their one hit, mostly because I kind of liked the sound of it and they were a local band to boot (in fact, the back cover of their CD features a photo taken at the main crossroads out in Apache Junction, not too far from where my parents live now ^_^). I'd really have to listen to the whole CD to acquaint myself with all the songs and decide how or if they resonate with me. But I thought I'd share the three I'm familiar with. Because they've got a wee bit of nostalgia value now, and the sound is very vaguely reminiscent of doa to my ears by now and kind of summery and the singer's voice is in the perfect range and register for me to sing along with easily. ^_^;

Banditos - Everybody knows/That the world is full of stupid people
This was their hit. I've no idea how much it got played elsewhere or if it even made much of a splash outside the Phoenix area. But there at home, it was played well into the ground. I got a bit tired of it. It's alright to hear again now after a good eight years or so, but I never thought it was their best song. Though the Star Trek reference dropped into the chorus always amused me, because those were my heavy-Trekkie-geekdom days.

Down Together - I could give you a star/You could give me one too/And that way we'd be even
There was a station in town that played two other songs besides just 'Banditos'; this was one of the two. It's...it's a bright, honestly simple down-to-earth-ly romantic song. It's really not sappy at all, but there's something about it that just makes me go 'Awwwww. It's so sweet!' ^_^ The up-front earnest simplicity of it makes me think of Goku somehow, too. On a side note.

Mekong - Barkeep -- another Mekong please/Yes of course you can keep the change/A new glass here for this new friend of mine/Forgive me I forgot your name
This is the other that the one station would play, and it's honestly my favorite of the three. There's something vaguely...uh, tropical? about the sound, and vaguely melancholy. The harmonies have wonderful singalong value, and...well, overall, it's just a good song. Not a spectacularly great grand awe-inspiring song. But a good song. ^_^

hehe. I remember Banditos being played a lot in the late 90s. ^_^ That was my community college DJ gig time, and i was one of the culprits. But the time it was at it's peak? The major alternative station down in Detroit latched onto it hard and so did i. It was on heavy rotation for a bit and eventually left hte airwaves. Now i it has that oo lovely quality to it. I remember being amused at the ST: TNG reference in it too. (and gods. GUITAR band. no wonder i was in love, i think this was my Everclear love period too.) You can tell i was pretty much post grunge for all it was worth in my case. Portishead, STP, Pearl Jam, all that lovely stuff that came out AFTER grunge faded a bit and the Kobain frenzy eased off.

Giving the other two tracks a listen too, since i didn't play the others much. I always did want to hear more from these guys and never had the chance.

Oh...i've heard Down Together! Don't ask me where, but i have! *dances* Wonder if it was the same Detroit station or the quirky canuck station across the river that did it?

*grins* Ohh, goody, you remember them too!

*rummages through music library for any other guitar bands that might be lurking in the stacks*

Ahhh... *still rummaging* I'm afraid it's more hair-metal than post-grunge, here, but...mmh. I'll keep looking.

I've never heard of them, but you made me curious, so I had to snag these. I like it! It's a sound I like a lot. Thank you for sharing!
