This takes place in, what, 7th century China? Ignoring the anachronisms, I'm pretty sure both homosexuality and what we consider paedophilia were both common. People often forget that things were different in other time periods. Or, if they choose to remember, they simply tack on their own values to the situation. "Gasp!
