Soo. In finally having gotten ahold of Reload v4, and read it through, and soaked in the painfully-delicious goodness that is Gojyo-Hakkai-Burial-Arc (and puzzling over things I just don't remember being in there in the scanlations I've read), I find myself at long last properly introduced to Hazel.

I must say, I was utterly and completely unprepared for the out-dated Texas accent.

And I also noticed that he seems to be dropping the second half of Gato's name. Unless of course it's habit for him to refer to his companion as 'Gat' and I've just never seen it in the little dribbles of Hazel-fandom that I've been exposed to...

Somehow, though, I...not that I know the character well at all, but it doesn't seem his style. Then again, neither does the old-west drawl. *shrug* I'm inclined to think that both are Tokyo-Pop translation quirks, but please, do correct me if I'm wrong. ^_^

In other news.

Nataku appears to have bitten a chunk out of his tail, the little brat. Either that or it's fin rot. I'm inclined to think biting, however, as the rest of his fins appear perfectly normal and it's just the one distinctly-mouth-sized horeshoe-shape missing. Besides, it rather suits his personality - 'I refuse to be the one with the prettiest fins!' *chomp* 'Take that!'

*sigh*

Also. My fellow Hakuryuu/Hakkai fans might enjoy this fic as recced by

baka_gaijin. I'm afraid that I do have issues with the voice and characterization, but I freely admit that I'm quite opinionated and picky about such things - especially where Hakuryuu and Goujun are concerned - and to see past those issues is to find the heart of the story utterly beautiful.

It leaves me pondering a somewhat similar plot-bunny, however; one that bit several months ago, has been relatively quiet since, and in all likelihood will settle back into patient silence before I can attend to it. Alas. For the moment, however, I am indulging this bunny with musical assistance, inadvertent scent associations (ohhh, Sea of Glass *_*), and far more of my brain's attention than I ought to be sparing. ^_^; I'm afraid it just can't be helped.

When, oh when, will this lovely-yet-damnable rain ever cease?

Well, since everyone and his brother in English translates Kansai-ben (Hazel's dialect) as the equivalent of a hick Texas drawl, that's what Hazel got.

And aside from being annoying as hell, a soft, more subtle deep South accent would suit much better. But hey, let's just go straight for annoying. Fans don't know anything about Japanese, right?

And also: I think he's SUPPOSED to be Gat. The only reason it's pronounced "Gato" in Japanese is because there is no 't' sound without a vowel on the end. Every syllable but one in Japanese ends in a vowel. It's even spelled in romanized English as "Gat" in the Saiyuubito official guide.

Unfortunately, GATO sounds better. :/

Gat is correct. The dictionary meaning sums up everything about Gato and his gatling guns.

And wow, TokyoPop got something correct?

Fans don't know anything about Japanese, right?

Well clearly not. I mean, really, apparently we couldn't figure out what a -san or a -dono meant in the early volumes so dear TokyoPop has now catered to our utter lack of any sort of basic intelligence by 'Mr.'-ing the honorifics. Which...really, it annoys the f*ck out of me. It just sounds stupid.

And I still can't help thinking 'cat' every time I read 'Gato', no matter how many years ago Spanish class was. ^_^;

Cat can be used as a spirit for Indian Tribes. Gat is an Indian afterall along with Hazel Grouse did travel from America.

I wouldn't mind at all! ^_^

And yes. Trying to translate honorifics into English rarely works very well at all. I mean, the whole reason I can tell that an honorific was used in the source is because the 'Mr.' or whatever sounds so very out of place. I mean, honestly. 'Lord Sanzo'? *shakes head* From Gojyo, especially. It lacks the flippant, digging finesse of a flippant, insincere 'Sanzo-sama'. And it really annoys me in this case even more, because I'm quite sure I remember 'Hakkai-dono' and 'Yaone-san' being used back in volumes 2 or 3. But now they're translating. Feh.
